I am 23 year old lady living in Cleveland, Ohio. I am hoping to make my escape to greener pastures sometime very soon.

Post with 1 note

So, a few days ago I was woken up to a text message from an unidentified number with the message that simply said, “Let’s bang.” I responded with a, “who is this?” which got no response. Please note how the original text message wasn’t even a question, but a flat out statement. After some finagling I got the sender of the message on the phone and figured out that I did, in fact, know who they were.

The person in question is a boy that I met one night after a few too many cocktails. He invited a friend of mine and me to lunch the next day at the restaurant he worked at. We obviously accepted because hey, who am I to turn down a free lunch? So, we went into his restaurant, ate a quick meal, and left. On the way out he cornered my friend and I and asked for our numbers. Since I am too chickenshit to ever give out a fake number, I gave him my real number with no real intention of ever seeing him again. This magical evening/afternoon occurred at least a month and a half ago and I haven’t heard a peep from this ‘gentleman’. Apparently at 3 in the morning on a Tuesday night he felt the incredible urge to text a virtual stranger and demand sex. My question that I am sending out into cyber space is, When did this become appropriate?

I realize that I have for sure sent out text messages that I should not have after a night of drinking but at least I send them to friends. Is this kid so desperate for friends/sex that he has to text a near stranger? Or was he really so drunk that he didn’t care that he hardly knows me? Was he expecting a response or was this all a joke? I understand that I am completely over analyzing this situation and the text message didn’t really bother me and isn’t really a problem but a symptom of a much larger problem. My generation.

I am 23 years old and face to face contact with the opposite sex is becoming obsolete. People meet each other online and can have entire relationships without once meeting in person. Dating has become a thing of the past. I can’t remember the last time I heard one of my friends tell me that they were going on an actual date. People meet up in bars and communicate via e-mail, phone calls, texting, and once things get super serious, ‘sexting’ (I just watched an entire Tyra Banks Show episode about sexting, its getting pretty serious apparently). I can not even count how many lewd text messages I have gotten from boys. I have enough dirty pictures on my phone to fill an issue of Playgirl (Is this magazine still even around?) I suppose what this rant-y entry is supposed to get across is that I wish guys were more romantic. I wish people still went to dinner and a movie. I am jealous of people who get to have those first date butterflies.
